There are many families that are torn apart when the father, mother or both are sent to prison and the children are left alone outside with no support, and their lives follow and go far into the mud.

However, there is one prison in the world that has `solved` this problem, which is Aranjuez prison in Spain.

Aranjuez Prison allows children (under 3 years old) to stay with relatives who are detained in prison.

This place is full of play areas, kindergartens, Disney characters posted on the walls… The purpose is to prevent children from realizing that their parents are `sitting behind bars`, for as long as possible.

The months spent in prison will help parents and children bond more, and let prisoners reflect on themselves and learn parenting skills.

Victor Manuel Lozano (2 years old) also experienced peaceful days of childhood like his peers.

I went to kindergarten, learned to draw, and learned to ride a tricycle.

`They take care of us very well, having my husband and children by my side makes me feel very happy,` said Carmen Garcia, 28 years old, Victor Manuel’s mother.

`But this is not the best place to raise a child. In fact, they are also imprisoned,` she said.

Garcia was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison for killing her boyfriend.

Aranjuez is the only prison in the world with family cells.

Outside there is a playground for children to freely run and play.

The children can only stay until 3 years old.

`It’s difficult being in prison, but here, you completely forget you’re in prison,` said Ramona Montoya, 33, a woman who was once a notorious gangster, serving an 11-year sentence for trafficking.

Montoya and her husband, who was also convicted of drug trafficking, took their fourth child in with them.

Montoya takes her one-year-old daughter to kindergarten every morning while her husband works at the prison supermarket.

`This is heaven compared to other prisons I’ve been to,` Montoya said while showing off the place she calls home, Room 113.

It’s a 14 square meter room, the walls are filled with images of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and family photos.

`It’s all about the kids. It’s clean, they give you the best milk for the kids, the doctor comes twice a week, and the rooms are beautiful,` Montoya said.

Aranjuez Prison has a total of 36 such rooms, but not all prisoners qualify for the `incentive` to bring their children to live with them.

Pedophiles and other convicted sex offenders are excluded.

Spanish authorities say such a prison model has been effective but admit emotional problems can arise when children are separated from their parents.

Criminal psychologist Maria Yela expressed doubts about whether prison life is good for children, but she said the most important thing is for families to stay together.
