Princess Myrrha is probably one of the famous characters in Greek mythology.
Princess Myrrha and the curse of goddess Aphrodite
To meet Myrrha (also known as Smyrna), daughter of King Cinyras of the island of Syprus, a king mentioned in the epic Iliad.
Knowing this, the goddess punished Myrrha by making her fall in love with the person she was not allowed to fall in love with: King Cinyras – her biological father.
Manipulated by intense desire, Princess Myrrha almost hanged herself, but her childhood nurse prevented her from doing so.
The tragedy of the princess
One morning, King Cinyras woke up and realized the sin he had committed.
Nine months later, a wild boar crashed into a myrrh tree and broke its trunk.
It’s unclear whether because she was too embarrassed by her feelings for Adonis or because she wanted to hide the consequences of the curse, Aphrodite hid the baby in a chest and gave it to the goddess Persephone to raise.
Tragedy lingers
Persephone saw the baby and immediately loved it.
Time passed, Adonis became a handsome young man, but the tragedy was not over.
